Poland

We've reviewed our travel advice for Poland. We haven't changed the advice level, exercise normal safety precautions. As Poland is part of the Schengen area, you can enter Poland without a visa in some cases. Entry and exit conditions can change at short notice. Romania

Bangladesh

Increased political activity, including public demonstrations and rallies, is expected in the lead-up to elections in Bangladesh, due to be held by January 2024. Avoid protests, demonstrations and rallies, as these can turn violent without warning. Remain aware of your surroundings (see 'Safety'). We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Bangladesh overall due to the threat of terrorism and the potential for public demonstrations which could escalate. Higher levels apply in some areas.  

Iraq

We've reviewed our advice for Iraq. We haven't changed the level of our advice, do not travel. The security situation throughout Iraq remains volatile. Due to the security environment and the ongoing threat of kidnappings, you should leave Iraq immediately by commercial means, if it's safe to do so. If you're staying in Iraq, be alert and check media for updates on new threats (see 'Safety'). Due to the deteriorating security environment in Iraq, non-essential Australian staff posted at the Australian Embassy in Baghdad are being temporarily redeployed outside Iraq. We continue to advise: Do not travel to Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, due to the volatile security situation and very high risk of violence, armed conflict, kidnapping and terrorist attack.

Kuwait

We've reviewed our advice for Kuwait. We haven't changed the level of our advice, exercise a high degree of caution. We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Kuwait due to the possibility of terrorist attacks.

Mexico

Hurricane Otis has impacted the Pacific south coast of Mexico near Acapulco. There’s been damage to infrastructure including hotels, transport, communications and health services. Acapulco airport is closed (see ‘Safety’). We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Mexico overall due to high levels of violent crime. Higher levels apply in some areas.

The Bahamas

We've reviewed our advice for The Bahamas and continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution. Travellers may be victims of violent crime, including in resorts. Be aware of your surroundings and keep valuables out of sight (see 'Safety'). We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in The Bahamas overall due to the high levels of violent crime.

Kenya

We've reviewed our advice for Kenya and continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution. Terrorists maintain a strong interest in attacking foreigners in Nairobi and other major population centres in Kenya. Attacks could occur at any time and with little or no warning. Avoid areas prone to attack and remain vigilant if visiting public areas (see 'Full advice - Safety - Terrorism'). Protests can be expected across Kenya. Avoid protests and public gatherings. Monitor the media and follow the advice of local authorities. We now also advise reconsider your need to travel to the border areas with South Sudan and Ethiopia (except Mandera County where we continue to advise Do Not Travel). We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Kenya overall due to the high crime levels and the threat of terrorist attack. Higher levels apply in some areas.

Solomon Islands

Honiara will host the 2023 Pacific Games between 19 November and 3 December. There's likely to be extra demands on local infrastructure and resources, as well as traffic congestion. Make early preparations if you are visiting Honiara during this time. (See 'Travel'). Political unrest can happen in Honiara during sittings of Parliament, elections and times of political uncertainty. Demonstrations can turn violent quickly. Avoid protests and political gatherings. Solomon Islands can experience extreme weather. The cyclone season is from November to May. Follow updates and instructions from local authorities, such as the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service. Mobile and internet services can be limited in some areas. Have a backup communications plan. The hyperbaric chamber in Honiara is currently out of operation. Italy

Temporary border checks have been introduced at Italy's borders with Slovenia. You should allow extra time for crossing the land border between Italy and Slovenia (see 'Travel'). We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in Italy.  

Portugal

We continue to advise exercise normal safety precautions in Portugal. Strikes and public demonstrations are common. These can cause street congestion, disrupt public services, and affect transport services. Most demonstrations are peaceful but could become violent. Avoid demonstrations and public gatherings, monitor the media and follow the advice of local authorities (see 'Safety'). We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in Portugal.

Indonesia

We've reviewed our advice for Indonesia and continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution. Check that your medication is legal in Indonesia before purchasing or bringing it with you. Ensure you have travel insurance and that your policy covers you for planned activities. Check proper safety equipment is available and weather conditions are suitable before continuing with adventure activities and sea travel. We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia overall due to security risks. Higher levels apply in some areas.

South Africa

We've reviewed the travel advice for South Africa and continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution. Protests and large gatherings can occur anywhere in South Africa at any time. Avoid areas affected by protests and demonstrations. We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in South Africa due to the high level of serious crime.

Yemen

We've reviewed our travel advice for Yemen. We haven't changed the level of our advice. We continue to advise do not travel to Yemen, including the island of Socotra. There's ongoing armed conflict and a very high threat of kidnapping and terrorism. We continue to advise: Do not travel to Yemen (including the island of Socotra) due to ongoing armed conflict, and the very high threat of kidnapping and terrorism.

Croatia

Border checks have been re-introduced for travel between Croatia and other countries in the Schengen Area, including Slovenia. You'll require a valid passport for travel (see 'Travel'). We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in Croatia.

Samoa

We've reviewed our advice for Samoa and continue to advise exercise normal safety precautions. We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in Samoa.

Uganda

We continue to advise reconsider your need to travel within 50 kilometres of the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (excluding the Eastern shores of Lake Albert). LGBTQI+ travellers should carefully consider the risks of travelling to Uganda following the adoption of a new Anti-Homosexuality Act in May (see 'Local laws'). We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Uganda overall due to the threat of terrorist attack, civil unrest and criminal activity. Higher levels apply in some areas.

Cyprus

There are additional security measures in place at Larnaca and Pafos airports. You should arrive at your terminal at least 3 hours before your flight's departure time. We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Cyprus due to the active UN peacekeeping operation in the country.

Chile

Australian citizens must have a visa to enter Chile. Ensure you apply well in advance to avoid issues on arrival. If your planned travel requires you to transit through Chile, contact your nearest Embassy or Consulate of Chile to confirm if you need a visa (see 'Travel'). We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Chile due to potential demonstrations, civil unrest and violence.

Belgium

A shooting has taken place in central Brussels. The Brussels-Capital Region is now at threat level 4 of 4, meaning there's a serious and imminent threat. The threat level for the remainder of the country has been raised to level 3 of 4, meaning there's a possible and imminent threat. Avoid the area of the shooting and follow the advice of local authorities. We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Belgium due to the risk of terrorist attack.

Qatar

It's mandatory for all visitors to Qatar to purchase approved medical insurance before, or on arrival. Hayya cards obtained to enter Qatar during the 2022 FIFA World Cup may be used for entry until January 2024. You may be eligible for a visa on arrival, depending on your country of residence and purpose of travel. See 'Travel' for more information on entry requirements. We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in Qatar.

Egypt

We continue to advise reconsider your need to travel to Egypt. Terrorist attacks could occur anywhere in Egypt. Potential targets include religious sites and tourist locations. The situation in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories could lead to increased tensions and the security situation could deteriorate with little notice. Avoid all demonstrations and protests. Peaceful protests and rallies can turn violent at short notice. Be aware, follow the advice of local authorities and monitor local media for updates. The Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt may be closed or have highly restricted access for long periods and is subject to change at short notice. It has been subject to air strikes during the current Gaza conflict. We advise: Reconsider your need to travel to Egypt overall due to the risk of terrorist attack. Other levels apply in some areas.  

Greece

Public protests, strikes, demonstrations and events that draw large groups of people occur regularly and often with little notice. Monitor the media and follow the advice of local authorities. Petty crime and theft are serious issues in tourist areas, on public transport and in accommodation, including short-term rentals. Pay close attention to your belongings, particularly your passport, bank cards and phone. We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in Greece. 

Mozambique

There is an extreme risk of terrorism in Cabo Delgado province and in Erati and Memba districts of Nampula province. We continue to advise do not travel to Cabo Delgado province, Erati and Memba districts of Nampula province. Terrorists are likely to target areas frequented by foreigners or where foreign companies operate and where expatriate staff reside. Australians in Cabo Delgado and in Erati and Memba districts of Nampula province should leave the area if it's safe to do so. If you decide to remain in the area, maintain heightened security awareness, monitor local media and follow the advice of local authorities. We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Mozambique overall due to the risk of terrorism and high levels of serious crime. Higher levels apply in some parts of the country.

Guatemala

Ongoing demonstrations are disrupting road transport and affecting travel across the country. Avoid protests and public gatherings. If you're in an affected area, you should leave as soon as it's safe to. Monitor local media and follow the advice of local authorities. We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Guatemala due to high levels of violent crime.

Guam

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Guam due to the approach of Tropical Storm Bolaven. A typhoon watch remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan. Guam has been placed in Condition of Readiness 2, which means damaging winds are expected within 24 hours (9 - 10 October). Follow the advice of local authorities. (see ‘Safety’). We now advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in Guam.

Jordan

You'll need a visa to visit Jordan. Multiple visa options are available, depending on the purpose of your travel. Land border crossings may close without notice and for an unknown amount of time. If you're departing Israel to Jordan, check the Jordanian and Israeli government websites to determine if border crossings are open before travel. We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Jordan overall due to the threat of terrorist attack. Higher levels apply in some areas. 

Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories

Rockets have been fired at Israel from Gaza, with separate terror attacks on civilians. The Israel Defense Force has tightened security around Gaza. Monitor media and public safety information updates through the National Emergency Portal (accessible in Israel only). See 'Safety'. We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories overall due to civil unrest and the threat of terrorist attack, rocket fire and military confrontation. Higher levels apply in some areas.

Afghanistan

We've reviewed our advice for Afghanistan. We continue to advise do not travel to Afghanistan. There's an ongoing and very high threat of terrorist attacks throughout Afghanistan, including in Kabul. Terrorists continue to target foreigners, NGOs and humanitarian operations. Foreign nationals, including Australians, also face a serious threat of kidnapping or detention. There are no Australian officials in Afghanistan, and our ability to provide consular and passport assistance to Australians in Afghanistan is severely limited. We continue to advise: Do not travel to Afghanistan due to the extremely dangerous security situation and the very high threat of terrorism and kidnapping.

Pakistan

We've reviewed our advice for Pakistan and continue to advise reconsider your need to travel. We now also advise reconsider your need to travel to Abbottabad and Haripur districts. Higher levels apply in some areas. There are ongoing protests in Pakistan which can turn violent quickly. Avoid large groups of people, demonstrations and protests. The security situation is evolving and remains unpredictable. Authorities may suspend internet and mobile phone networks and close roads and highways at short notice. Transit to and from Islamabad International Airport may be impeded by protest activity. Monitor media for information on the latest developments and follow the instructions of local authorities. Cameroon

South Sudan

We've reviewed our advice for South Sudan and continue to advise do not travel. The political and security situation is volatile and can worsen without warning. Our ability to provide consular services in South Sudan is extremely limited. If you're in South Sudan, and it's safe to do so, leave as soon as possible. We continue to advise: Do not travel to South Sudan, including Juba, due to instability and ongoing conflict.

Belarus

We've reviewed our advice for Belarus. We haven't changed the level of our advice, do not travel to Belarus. The security environment is volatile and could deteriorate at short notice. Belarus has laws incurring jail sentences for 'terrorism propaganda' and 'discrediting' the Belarusian armed forces and military organisations. Penalties may be severe, including the death penalty for high treason. If you're in Belarus, leave immediately using the limited commercial options available or private means. Review your personal security plans and carefully consider the safest means and route to depart. You're responsible for your own safety and that of your family. Do not attempt to travel to the Belarus-Ukraine border or cross into Ukraine from Belarus. Our ability to provide consular assistance in Belarus is severely limited. Spain

United Arab Emirates

You won't be allowed to enter the UAE if the date of birth in your Australian passport shows 'XX' instead of a day, month or year (see 'Travel'). If you have unresolved criminal charges in the UAE, including unpaid debts, authorities may detain you when you arrive, even if you're in transit. We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in the United Arab Emirates.
