Guinea

We’ve reviewed our advice for Guinea. We haven’t changed the level of our advice, exercise a high degree of caution. Higher levels apply in some areas. A large explosion at Guinea’s primary fuel depot on 18 December has caused widespread fuel shortages. Rising transportation costs have led to higher prices and shortages of basic food and services and have contributed to a heightened risk of crime. Local hospitals are under strain as a result of the explosion. There are ongoing heightened political and social tensions, including in the capital Conakry and other towns, with the potential for the situation to deteriorate without warning. Avoid protests and public gatherings as they can turn violent and remain vigilant. Follow the advice of local authorities and monitor local media for updates. China

We've reviewed our advice for China. We haven't changed the level of our advice, exercise a high degree of caution. As previously advised, authorities have detained foreigners on the grounds of ‘endangering national security’. Australians may be at risk of arbitrary detention or harsh enforcement of local laws, including broadly defined National Security Laws. We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in China overall.  Other levels apply in some areas.

Thailand

We've reviewed our advice and continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution in Thailand overall. We've lowered our advice for Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla provinces. We now advise reconsider your need to travel to Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces due to ongoing risks of low-level insurgent activity (see 'Safety'). We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution to Thailand overall due to the risk of civil unrest and the threat of terrorism, including in Bangkok and Phuket.  Higher levels apply in some areas.

Iceland

A volcanic eruption has occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula north of Grindavík. Avoid areas near the eruption site and areas close to mountains with steep slopes on the Reykjanes peninsula due to the danger of falling rocks. The international airport remains open. Monitor local media for updates and follow the advice of local authorities on exclusion zones and road closures (see 'Safety'). We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in Iceland.

Cambodia

We've reviewed our advice for Cambodia and continue to advise exercise normal safety precautions. We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in Cambodia.

Bulgaria

Extreme weather, including storms and snowfall, can occur throughout winter in Bulgaria. Monitor the media and follow the advice of local authorities if you're in an area affected by significant weather events. We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in Bulgaria.

Chad

We've reviewed our advice for Chad and continue to advise do not travel to Chad, and continue to advise reconsider your need to travel to the capital N’Djamena. The border with Sudan remains closed until further notice. Chad is extremely dangerous due to the risk of terrorism, kidnapping, civil unrest and violent crime. If, despite our advice, you travel to Chad, seek professional security advice. Avoid crowds, including any demonstrations or protests. Follow the advice of local authorities. Our ability to provide consular services in Chad is extremely limited. For consular assistance, contact the Australian Embassy in Paris (see 'Local contacts'). We continue to advise: Do not travel  to Chad overall due to the dangerous security situation and the threat of terrorism, kidnapping and violent crime. Other levels apply in some areas.

Egypt

We've reviewed our travel advice for Egypt and continue to advise reconsider your need to travel. Terrorist attacks could occur anywhere in Egypt. Potential targets include religious sites and tourist locations. The situation in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories could lead to increased tensions, and the security situation could deteriorate with little notice. Avoid all demonstrations and protests. Peaceful protests and rallies can turn violent at short notice. Be aware, follow the advice of local authorities and monitor local media for updates. The Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt may be closed or have highly restricted access for long periods and is subject to change at short notice. It has been subject to air strikes during the current conflict. We advise: Reconsider your need to travel to Egypt overall due to the threat of terrorism. Other levels apply in some areas.  

Burkina Faso

We've reviewed our advice for Burkina Faso and continue to advise do not travel due to the high threat of terrorism and kidnapping. The security situation in Burkina Faso continues to be volatile. A state of emergency has been declared in a number of regions, and more could be announced with short notice in other areas. Terrorist attacks can occur throughout Burkina Faso, including in Ouagadougou. Attacks could happen in places visited by foreigners, including airports, public transport and transportation hubs, tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets and hotels. The kidnapping risk of foreign nationals remains high in Burkina Faso. Foreign nationals and foreign interests, including mining operations, may be targeted (see 'Safety'). Democratic Republic of the Congo

We've reviewed our advice and continue to advise reconsider your need to travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Do not travel levels apply in some areas, updated to include Mai Ndombe province. The DRC will hold elections on 20 December. Civil unrest and political violence may occur in the lead-up to, during and following elections. Monitor the media for potential demonstrations or protests, avoid affected areas and follow the advice of local authorities (see 'Safety'). We advise: Reconsider your need to travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo overall due to the volatile security situation and the threat of terrorism and kidnapping. Higher levels apply in some areas.

Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories

We continue to advise reconsider your need to travel to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories overall due to the volatile security situation, including the threat of terrorism, armed conflict and civil unrest. We continue to advise do not travel to Gaza, border areas with Gaza, border areas with Lebanon closed by Israeli authorities and the West Bank (excluding East Jerusalem), due to the volatile security situation. The situation is rapidly changing. Australians who want to leave are strongly encouraged to take the first available option. Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport remains open and commercial flights are available. Airports may pause operations due to heightened security concerns. This may cause flight delays or cancellations. Monitor local media and public safety information updates through the National Emergency Portal (accessible in Israel only). Eritrea

We've reviewed our advice for Eritrea and continue to advise reconsider your need to travel. Since the conflict in northern Ethiopia, additional security measures may be introduced at short notice in Asmara and across the country (see 'Safety'). We advise: Reconsider your need to travel to Eritrea overall due to the risk of violent crime and potential conflict with neighbouring countries. Higher levels apply in some areas.

Zambia

There are currently outbreaks of cholera and anthrax in Zambia (see 'Health'). If you're entering Zambia as a visitor or tourist, you don't require a visa for stays of up to 90 days in a 12-month period. All visa fees have been removed for Australian passport holders visiting Zambia (see 'Travel'). We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in Zambia. Higher levels apply in some areas.

Guyana

Tension between Guyana and Venezuela has increased. The security situation may deteriorate near the Venezuelan border. If you choose to travel in this area, monitor local media and follow the advice of local authorities. We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Guyana due to the threat of violent crime. 

Seychelles

The Seychelles can experience severe weather, especially during the northwest monsoon season (December to March). The state of emergency issued on 7 December following an industrial explosion has now been lifted. Before travelling to the Seychelles, you must complete a Digital Travel Authorisation (see 'Travel'). We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in the Seychelles.

Malaysia

You're required to submit a Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) three days prior to arrival in Malaysia (see Travel). If you're suspected of using drugs, you may need to take a urine test on arrival in Malaysia. This includes if you're travelling from a country where possession and use of drugs such as cannabis is legal. Penalties for drug offences are severe (see Local Laws). We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in Malaysia. Higher levels apply in some areas.

Singapore

We’ve reviewed our advice for Singapore and continue to advise exercise normal safety precautions. Do not bring medicinal cannabis to Singapore, even during transit (see ‘Travel’). We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in Singapore.

Madagascar

We continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution in Madagascar. Civil unrest is common. Protests and demonstrations can turn violent and security forces may respond with force. Avoid protests, demonstrations and large public gatherings, monitor local news, and follow instructions from local authorities (see 'Safety'). We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Madagascar due to the threat of crime and risk of natural disasters and disease outbreaks.

Estonia

We continue to advise exercise normal safety precautions in Estonia. Estonia is part of the Schengen Area, meaning you can enter without a visa in some cases. We advise: Exercise normal safety precautions in Estonia.

Venezuela

We've reviewed our advice for Venezuela and continue to advise do not travel. The political and economic situation continues to be unstable. There are high levels of violent crime, and shortages of food, water, medicine and petrol. We continue to advise: Do not travel to Venezuela due to the dangerous security situation, the risk of food, water, medicine and petrol shortages, and the threat of violent crime.

Mozambique

Protests are occurring across Mozambique following the outcomes of municipal elections. There is an extreme risk of terrorism in Cabo Delgado province and in Erati and Memba districts of Nampula province. We continue to advise do not travel to Cabo Delgado province, Erati and Memba districts of Nampula province. Terrorists are likely to target areas frequented by foreigners or, where foreign companies operate and where expatriate staff reside. Australians in Cabo Delgado and in Erati and Memba districts of Nampula province should leave the area if it's safe to do so. If you decide to remain in the area, maintain heightened security awareness, monitor local media and follow the advice of local authorities. Ukraine

We've reviewed our travel advice for Ukraine and continue to advise do not travel to Ukraine due to the volatile security environment and military conflict. If you're currently in Ukraine, we urge you to depart if it's safe to do so. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is ongoing. The security situation continues to be volatile. Heavy fighting is occurring in parts of eastern and southern Ukraine. Missile strikes and attacks are ongoing in some locations across the country, including in major cities. There have been many casualties. Foreigners have been killed and may be targeted. Large amounts of unexploded ordnance and landmines are present in conflict and post-conflict areas. Do not travel to Ukraine. There is a serious risk to life. If you're in Ukraine, be aware of your surroundings, review your personal security plans and monitor media for information about changing security conditions and alerts to shelter in place. Timor-Leste

We've reviewed our advice for Timor-Leste. We haven't changed the level of our advice, exercise a high degree of caution. You can get a 30-day visa on arrival if you visit as a tourist and arrive via Nicolau Lobato International Airport or Dili Seaport. If you enter at another location or by land, you'll need to get a visa before arrival. We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Timor-Leste due to the threat of crime and limited healthcare options.

Hong Kong

We've reviewed our advice for Hong Kong and continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution. Hong Kong's National Security Law could be interpreted broadly, and you could break the law without intending to (see 'Local laws'). We advise: Exercise a high degree of caution in Hong Kong.

Afghanistan

We've reviewed our advice for Afghanistan. We continue to advise do not travel to Afghanistan. There's an ongoing and very high threat of terrorist attacks throughout Afghanistan, including in Kabul. Terrorists continue to target foreigners, NGOs and humanitarian operations. Foreign nationals, including Australians, also face a serious threat of kidnapping or detention. There are no Australian officials in Afghanistan, and our ability to provide consular and passport assistance to Australians in Afghanistan is severely limited. We continue to advise: Do not travel to Afghanistan due to the extremely dangerous security situation and the very high threat of terrorism and kidnapping.

Indonesia

We've reviewed our advice for Indonesia and continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution. Check that your medication is legal in Indonesia before purchasing or bringing it with you. Ensure you have travel insurance and that your policy covers you for planned activities. Check proper safety equipment is available and weather conditions are suitable before continuing with adventure activities and sea travel.
