Afghanistan

On 14 April 2021, NATO announced it would withdraw all troops from Afghanistan by September 2021. On 15 April, Prime Minister Morrison announced that the last remaining Australian troops will depart Afghanistan by September 2021. The 2020 US-Taliban deal expires on 1 May 2021 and there's the potential for increased risk of attacks around and following this date. If despite our advice, you’re in Afghanistan, be alert and follow the advice of local authorities. The serious and ongoing threats of kidnapping and the volatile security environment have not changed.

We continue to advise:

Do not travel to Afghanistan due to:

  • the extremely dangerous security situation and the very high threat of terrorist attack
  • due to the health risks from the COVID-19 pandemic and the significant disruptions to global travel.
